Paul Bernardo

Paul Bernardo’s parents, Marilyn and Kenneth, married in 1960. Kenneth had been raised in an abusive home and brought that abuse into his new home. The couple had a son and a daughter. Marilyn then had an affair and became pregnant, with Paul, and he was born in 1964.

Kenneth Bernardo was an abusive man. He sexually molested his own daughter and, in 1975, was charged molesting another young girl. It has also been reported that Kenneth was a peeping Tom. Marilyn reportedly suffered from depression and withdrew from her family, basically living in her basement. People described Paul as happy and energetic young boy, and it seemed as though he had somehow escaped the effects of the emotionally and physically abusive home he came from.

When Paul was 16 years old he had an argument with his parents, and his mother told him that Kenneth was not his father. He reportedly called her a whore.

Bernardo graduated from college and was interested in sales work and liked motivational speakers. He enjoyed going out with his friends and picking up girls - something he was apparently very good at. Bernardo then went to the University of Toronto, and it became routine for him to beat and publicly humiliate women he was dating.

Paul married Karla Homolka, and the couple moved to an upscale neighbourhood in Port Dalhousie (a part of St. Catharines, Ontario), where they rented a house. Bernardo had decided that a day job was not his thing, and he came to the realization that he was going to be the next big rap star. When he wasn’t busy raping and murdering young girls with his wife, or peeping and following women around with his video camera, he divided much of his time between recording his beats at home and smuggling cigarettes across the Canada-US border. 

Scoptophilia (Voyeurism)

Receiving sexual gratification by peeping through windows and so forth to watch people. Several serial killers in one study had, at one time or another, peeped through windows. One offender explained how he first began as a voyeur, then graduated to raping women, and finally practiced necrophilia. The connection between voyeurism and homicide is not automatic. Most “peeping Toms” never progress past this deviant stage, whereas some may later attempt rape or other violent sexual behaviours.

Paul Bernardo continued to watch women even after he had raped and killed. On one occasion, he was caught videotaping a young lady in a coffee shop.

Canadian Serial Killers

Clifford Olson

Olson had been in trouble with the law from a very young age. As a child he was known as a bully who was rumoured to have tortured and killed animals. Before he began to kill he spent time in jail for robbery and fraud. In 1980, Olson killed 11 young men and women between the ages of 9 and 18. He travelled across British Columbia to find his victims and was finally caught in 1981 while attempting to abduct two young girls. Olson made a deal with the police to release the whereabouts of the bodies if his wife recieved $100 000 ($10 000 per body, as Olsen deemed the first to be a ‘freebie’). Police made the deal to give closure to the families and in 1982 Olsen was sentenced to 11 concurrent life sentences. He did in prison this year in 2011. 

Robert Pickton

Pickton is, to date, Canada’s wort serial killer. A pig farmer from British Columbia, Pickton kidnapped and murdered prostitutes, allegedly feeding the remains to his pigs and possibly even his dinner guests. Pickton’s farm was being searched by the RCMP for illegal firarms when an officer discovered human remains. Pickton is still in front of courts and so far has been charged with the murder of 26 women. However, Pickton told an officer that his count was ‘one away from 50’.

Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka

While dating, Bernardo and Homolka drugged and raped 15 year old Tammy Holmoka, Karla’s younger sister. The couple videotaped the night; Tammy choked to death on her own vomit. Their second victim was 14 year old Leslie Mahaffy, who he kidnapped when she was locked out of house because she missed her curfew in June 1991  When she went to use a pay phone at the nearby convenience store, Bernardo lured her into his car with the offer a cigarette. Mahaffy was raped and beaten for over 24 hours until Bernado strangled her with an electircal cord. They body was cut into pieces, encased in cement, and thrown into a lake. The cement quickly broke apart and the body was discovered. The same day that Mahaffy’s body was discovered, Bernardo and Holmoka got married. The third victim was 15-year old Kristen French who, like Mahaffy, was raped, tortured, and strangled with the same electrical cord. French’s body was left in an illegal garbage dump.

Bernardo and Holmoka were caught in late 1992. Bernardo, who is also believed to be the Scarborough Rapist, was sentenced to life in the Kinston Penetentiary. Holmoka made a plea bargain, was convicted of manslaughter, and spent only twelve years in prison.

Leslie Mahaffy

Early in the morning of June 15, 1991, Leslie Mahaffy arrived home past curfew and the door was locked. The  14-year-old did not want to wake up her parents so she walked to a corner store where she called a friend and asked if she could sleep over. The friend said no and Leslie told her she would go home and wake up her mother. Before she made it home, Leslie Mahaffy met Paul Bernardo, and he told her he had been breaking into a house. He offered her a cigarette and when she walked over to his car, he abducted her. He took her home where he and his wife, Karla Homolka, raped and abused the girl (and videotaped it) for more than a day. Karla states that Paul then killed her, however, there has been speculation that it was Karla who had done the actual killing. It was Father’s Day so they put Leslie’s body in the basement while they entertained Homolka’s parents. They then dismembered her body, encased the pieces in cement and threw her in Lake Gibson (in Thorold,Ontario). 

Apparently, Bernardo bought the bags of cement mix at Beaver Lumber in St. Catharines, with his credit card. He bought too many bags and returned the leftover. The police never investigated purchases of cement mix when Mahaffy’s body was found. 

Kristen French

On  April 16, 1992, Kristen French was abducted while walking home from school, on a busy street, with many people driving by. She walked by the church parking lot where Karla Homolka and Paul Bernardo were parked, waiting for a victim. Karla asked Kristen for directions, and Paul came up behind her with a knife and forced her into the vehicle. The couple kept Kristen at their home for three days, where they raped, beat and degraded the 15-year-old girl, and videotaped the attacks and humiliation. They forced her to drink large quantities of alcohol while she was with them. Apparently, Paul wanted to keep her longer but Karla argued that they couldn’t leave her alone in the house while they went to Easter dinner at Karla’s parents, and Karla did not think it was acceptable to miss the dinner. While Kristen was kept in their home, Paul left the house to go pick up food and Karla did not take the opportunity to free Kristen.

Kristen was killed and they dumped her body out of town, just one mile from their previous victim’s gravesite.

Although Karla had the chance to set Kristen free, or flee to the police with her, she did not. Karla claimed she was too afraid of  Paul, and she made a fabulous bargain which had her do a few years in prison. After the deal was made, the police became aware of the existence of all the videotapes of attacks on their victims. They were apparently appalled to see the extent of Karla’s involvement in the attacks and her claims of being a scared battered wife were ferociously attacked by the community. However, the crown refused to alter her deal, even after the videotapes showed more rape victims that the Karla had not told them about. During Kristen French’s abduction and three days of rape and torture, Paul Bernardo’s DNA was sitting in a police lab, waiting to be tested.

Serial Killers - POWER/CONTROL-ORIENTED TYPE

This type of serial killer derives profound satisfaction from the process of having complete life-or-death control over the victim. Current writing has often emphasized the sexual aspects of many serial murderers, such as some of those committed by Ted Bundy. However, for many serial killers, “the fundamental source of pleasure is not sexual, it is the killer’s ability to control and exert power over his helpless victim” (Holmes and De Burger 1985).

This kind of control, sought by a power-oriented serial killer, is perceived by the killer as the ultimate power to determine another’s fate. The sexual aspects of murders committed by this type of killer are incidental, not central, to the killing. Rape, sodomy, or destruction of sexual anatomy, far from being erotic, are but expressions of power and control over the victim. Whether the victim is male or female, the brutality that often accompanies murders perpetrated by this type of killer will maximize and reinforce the perverted motives of power and control.
